Don’t be fooled by all the home improvement contractors that have jumped on the energy auditing bandwagon and are calling themselves Energy Auditors with no training or certification. Many contractors mislead home owners regarding the rebates available to them if they perform improvements that will make the home more energy efficient (such as new windows, insulation, duct work, etc.).
There are rebates that are available only when the improvements are performed by a BPI (Building Performance Institute) Accredited Contractor and the audit was done by a BPI Certified Building Analyst!
In our research, we called many contractors who offer home energy audits and asked if they, as a company are BPI accredited and if the analyst that would be sent to my house was a BPI certified Building Analyst. They said "no, but…." There are no buts! You can not participate in the Home Performance with Energy Star (HPwES) program unless you use a contractor that is BPI accredited AND approved with HPwES.
BPI certification is expensive, time consuming and difficult for the average small contractor. The equipment that a contractor has to buy in order to perform an audit to BPI standards is VERY expensive. Most contractors will not become certified because it means time away from work (weeks at a time for the different certifications, extremely difficult written and field tests, expensive equipment to buy and training courses and hotel stays to pay for).
Triple H Contracting Inc. holds Building Analyst, Envelope Professional and Heating Professional certifications from the Building Performance Institute.
